Pound Shop, Cheap Rubbish or Cheap Delights? by Harry Wilcock
The pound shop, the place where everything on their shelf is always only one pound. These shops have been springing up everywhere since the start of the credit crunch, and shops such as Poundland have been springing up all over the country. But why have pound shops suddenly become so popular, is it simply because people want to save money now the credit crunch is on, or do they really offer value for money?
When I was growing up, these shops were a a lot different. You'd go in and see a whole lot of random products stacked up on shelves, some bits half broken and generally tatty. You could find the odd good thing in there, such as diaries and toys for non 'name brand conscious' kids, but not much more. The shops were generally dingy, and only a select few people would shop there.
These days, they're something else completely. They are competitive retail chains, all competing for the new generation of one pound shoppers. Rarely are top level pound shops such as Poundland empty, as people are starting to realise cheap doesn't always mean poor quality.
The main difference in these shops now and when I was younger is the choice. Now the pound shops offer food and cleaning product, something they did do before. Many of these are also name brand products, such as Colgate, Radox, Nestle, Heinz, and many more. These would be selling for much more in general supermarkets, so why not go to Poundland and get the same product for cheaper?
Making their customers feel more like they're shopping in a supermarket then a pound shop is one of the reasons these shops have become so successful, people are generally no longer embarrassed to be seen going into a pound shop. Many 'cheap delights' can be picked up for a minimum price, and as we know, everyone loves a bargain!
